Screen Recorder & Screen Capture with Jing

Business, Software, Technology, Windows November 17th, 2009

Most of the work today involves working with computers. More people spending more time working on computers eventually creates the need to share information. What if you get a computer error while working and want to explain it to support department? What if you don’t want to waste your time and the support personnel’s time explaining the error in an email? What if you want to show your design to a client? What if you could simply get a screen capture of the error and share it with support department? Better yet, what if you could record what is happening on the screen? This is where Jing comes in handy. [Read more...]

Why Windows win over Linux

Business, Windows August 3rd, 2009

We’ve all heard how Linux gives us the total control of the operating system (OS), how secure it is, how robust it is and on top of all how the price beat every other commercial OS in the market. Personally I would like to use Linux. In fact I have used few distributions from time to time but I always had to turn to Windows due to the nature of my work. Then again I’m a Web Designer / Developer who can’t live without Adobe suite. But a System Admin would prefer Linux for work. That brings up the golden question for the divide; how many of us are System Admins by profession or in a similar capacity or “geeks”? And how many of us can spend our limited time to learn Windows equivalent tools in Linux? That could probably be the reason why people are reluctant to switch to Linux. [Read more...]

Tools to make your latest design cross-browser compatible

Software, Web Design, Windows August 2nd, 2009

Many of us get very excited when a new browser releases hoping it has bug fixes and improvements. However this could be a burden from a Web Designer’s perspective. It will be another web browser and/or version to the existing list of browser compatibility checks.

Good news is there are few free tools out there to check for cross browser compatibility of your web design work. Out of the lot my favourite for checking on different version of Internet Explorer (IE) is IETester. As of this writing, it supports IE 5.5, 6, 7, and 8. It runs independently from installed version of IE so your current installation will not be messed up. This works on Windows Vista but not without occasional crashes. Nevertheless it is the best tool I found so far to check the work on different versions of IE. [Read more...]

FREE screen capture tool in Windows Vista

Software, Windows October 13th, 2008

There are numerous times we need to do a simple screen capture. This could be to send a screen shot to a colleague or support staff etc. What one would normally do is use the Print Screen (PrtSc) key on the keyboard. But then you will have to open an image editor to get the screen capture. Sometimes you might need to crop the image as well.

Windows Vista has come up with a nice screen capture tool called the ‘Snipping Tool‘. This comes bundled with Windows Vista so you don’t need to download this separately. This screen capture tool can be located under Start->All Programs->Accessories->Snipping Tool or alternatively typing ‘snipping tool‘ in [Read more...]

DOS ‘Edit’ text editor on Vista

Windows August 29th, 2008

Can you believe Microsoft included their famous old ‘Edit’ DOS editor back from 1995 in Windows Vista? That means when they said Windows Vista is backward compatible, they really meant it. I used this long time back when I was learning Pascal programming. This came in as a surprise and sure reminded of the good old days.

Micorsoft DOS Editor

You can access Edit file editor the same way you did back then. Open the command prompt (for those who don’t know, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) and [Read more...]
