Can you believe Microsoft included their famous old ‘Edit’ DOS editor back from 1995 in Windows Vista? That means when they said Windows Vista is backward compatible, they really meant it. I used this long time back when I was learning Pascal programming. This came in as a surprise and sure reminded of the good old days.

You can access Edit file editor the same way you did back then. Open the command prompt (for those who don’t know, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) and type ‘edit’ (sans quotes) and hit enter and voilà!
How do you feel to see the old DOS editor back from time on your new Windows Vista computer? As for me, I felt great! Share your thoughts and if this tool has any emotional values than its use in todays computing world.

I have an HP laptop bought in March of 2009. The edit command does not work in the command line. Any suggestions?
I assume you tried this on Windows Vista?
I have run into the same issue as MacOren, no EDIT command in Vista’s Command Prompt. I bought my laptop last year, around June, for school and now I have an assignment that requires I edit a file using the command prompt. I brought up the list of commands and there was no command that edits files, not even EDLIN.
Hmm…it’s working fine on my Vista SP1. Can you please let me know the steps you followed so I can try to help? All you need to do is type EDIT once you open the command prompt.
It appears that EDIT is not available on the 64-bit version of Vista but it is on teh 32-bit.
Aha…That could be it. Thanks for sharing!
I don't think this works in the 64bit version of vista however, only 32bit.
