Sending e-mails from different aliases via Gmail

E-mail May 31st, 2008

If you are like me, you would probably have more than one e-mail account. One for business, another for family and friends etc. Sometimes you may find it difficult to send a e-mail to someone who you correspond with your other e-mail account. For example if you want to forward a business tip you received from a newsletter in your personal e-mail account with Gmail, and want to forward it to a client, you may have to first forward it to your business e-mail account and then forward from there to your client. What if you can simply select the e-mail alias you want to send, from within Gamil?

Gmail allows you to add other e-mail aliases to your Gmail account so you can select any of these e-mail aliases you add in the ‘From’ field when you send a e-mail. When you add a e-mail alias, Gmail sends a verification e-mail to that account with an activation URL and activation code. You can use either of the two to activate using of new alias from within Gmail.

To do this go to ‘Settings -> Accounts -> Add another email address.’ A pop-up box will appear so make sure pop-ups are allowed for Gmail. This pop-up has two text boxes. First box is to enter the outgoing name, which you would like to use. It can be either your name, nick name, company name or anything you like. Second box is to enter the e-mail address you would like to add. Once done, click the ‘Next Step’ button.

In this second step, you are required to authenticate the sending of verification e-mail to the account you wish to add. So if you still want to go ahead with this, click on the ‘Send Verification‘ button. It will send a e-mail to the account you are adding with the verification URL and verification code. Check the added account for this verification e-mail. You can either click on the verification URL given in the verification e-mail or insert the verification code given in the verification e-mail in the pop-up box to activate.

Now when you go to ‘Compose Mail‘ in Gmail, you have the option to chose either your Gmail account or the alias you just added in the ‘From‘ field. You can add more aliases the same way.
